NoExpiry: The Artist
Hi. I’m Demis Lyall-Wilson, an Edinburgh-based photographer, writer, and Hollywood visual-effects artist.
Coming from a visual background dominated by narrative imagery – from editorial fashion work through to high end digital trickery on major blockbusters (Star Wars, Aladdin etc.), NoExpiry represents my first long-form documentary project of this kind, and will take as long as it takes.
This departure from narrative and fantasy is no accident. When my own abuser passed in early 2019 (sidestepping the charges we’d been working toward by a handful of days) this project became an important channel for my own healing – a way to turn my own experience into something that might be helpful to those who call themselves survivors, and to keep finding ways to promote empathy and understanding among those who (fortunately) cannot.
I’m always happy to chat to people privately about the project, or any of this stuff, no matter what your age, experience, or gender. So do get in touch. Oh, and before you ask: yes, my own portraits will be included among all the rest. Seemed fair to go through the same process as everyone else, since hey: we’re all in this together.
— Demis
